Listen closely. Here is a prize winner who is obviously more intent on showing us the delicacy of the guitar than on dazzling an audience with virtuosic display. That is not to imply that Io Yamada lacks brilliance and flair. Quite to the contrary. On the other hand, his program focuses on the beauty of the sound of the guitar, on unadorned simplicity, balanced thoughtful phrasing, and other characteristics of the guitar that are part of its intimate essence. The program is built around works by nineteenth-century virtuosi Johann Kaspar Mertz (1806-1856) and Fernando Sor (1778-1839) together with twentieth-century compositions by Manuel Ponce (1882-1949) and Maurice Ohana (1913-1992). The program is crowned with the first recording of Cara y ceca, a work commissioned from Argentine composer Máximo Diego Pujol (b. 1957) especially for the 2023 edition of the International Guitar Competition Michele Pittaluga at which Io Yamada won first prize.
