LUZ AZUL

Francisco Bernier

I wrote this work, my first for this instrument, in 1995, for my friend the great Italian guitarist Sefano Cardi. In those years I thought that flamenco guitar was much more interesting than classical guitar (nowadays I'm not so sure), and this led me to use some of its own touches and gestures, integrated into my language at that time. I remember very well that the title arose after having seen the impressive retrospective exhibition of the work of the artist Ives Klein, at the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid. Somehow I thought of making a kind of homage to Klein's work, with those sculptures painted with cobalt blue pigments, Ives Klein blue. The premiere took place at the Acquario Romano (Rome), on October 3, 1995, with Stefano Cardi himself on guitar. Later, an accordion version of this work emerged, a concert for guitar and ensemble, LA MEMORIA DEL AGUA, and later a version of LUZ AZUL for trio with piano. This was the origin of a practice that I have developed extensively years later, rethinking a given work for other instrument(s) other than the original version.

Francisco Bernier's interpretation is special, the deep understanding of the energy of the music and the gestures and their sound trajectory is fascinating.
